This wasn’t my first visit to Carnoustie Golf Hotel but it was the first with these owners. It’s on a fantastic site; next to the golf courses and on the beach.
Catering for very varied guests, it is a pleasant hotel to stay in. I met locals who are members of the leisure club, groups who had just flown in for the golf, ladies (and yes, they happened to all be ladies) who had booked spa breaks, couples with children and people like myself who just wanted a short break.
The receptionists were helpful, arranging for us to check in early because our room was already prepared. I booked for dinner although it probably wasn’t necessary on the first night, on later nights it was busier.
I like the rooms in the hotel, they’re a good size and our room had a window looking out towards the golf course and the sunsets. The ensuite bathrooms are good, I would advise using the non-slip mat in the shower and also be careful to turn off the right tap when you’re finished- I got it wrong and it was very cold.
The menu was good with a fair selection of dishes. Some guests were on DBB with a 2-course dinner or £ contribution to the main menu. The specials were interesting, changing each night. Over the 3 nights I managed to taste calamari, duck spring rolls, chicken and roast beef. Portions were good and there was no danger of going away hungry without the platefuls being too big.
Breakfasts were the usual buffet style with hot food cooked to order.
The dog loved the place, even more so because she was allowed to stay in the room while I ate. Access to the beach and links meant nice walks. Various cafes in Carnoustie also allow welcome dogs so I have a feeling we might be going back.
