Dan McSweeney is an expert on the humpback whale migrations and takes boat trips out off Big Island during the winter months when the whales are present to have their calves or mate. As well as seeing whales, you may see dolphins, such as the spinner dolphins we were lucky enough to see, doing their amazing acrobatics. When you are not actually seeing whales, Captain Dan will give you information about the endangered humpbacks and what can be done to protect them. The 3 hour trip was absolutely fascinating.
The cost was $110 including healthy snacks and drinks. It is advisable to book in advance. The boat goes out at 7am and 11am durung the winter season, from Holualoa harbour, south of Kona airport.
