Don't be fooled into thinking Amsterdam is Holland. Travel north to Friesland and its peaceful green countryside. Villages are small and thatch common. In early June there are few cars to mask the swish of bicycle wheels on the ubiquitous cycle lanes, and wild flowers, sheep, goats and horses are everywhere. De Hertenweide is a small camping/caravan site, beautifully kept, very quiet and friendly. It has resident hens, goats, sheep, peacock and wild rabbits, and a children's play area. There is a good cafe/bar on the road outside, Zorgvlied is a few minutes walk away, and the area has excellent museums, country attractions, archaeological sites, etc. Thoroughly recommended area, and excellent for cyclists, walkers and car-drivers. Very tranquil still in early June.
