Reasons for trip

Our holiday to the USA was with our newly separated daughter and her two children. We challenged her to organise it, to take her mind off her marriage, and she was an excellent tour leader.

We flew from Heathrow, and travelled down from the Midlands and stayed overnight, as I have a fear of traffic jams and missed flights! We drove to Purple parking, which was next door to the hotel and got shuttle bus to airport. We met up with Alison, Ellie and Nate and went through the lengthy process of checking in suitcases (Alison had checked us in on line) and going through security; where, as usual, Philip set of detection device with his metal hip! We had breakfast overlooking the planes, then a lengthy wait before taking the shuttle under the runway to the long distance part of terminal 5 for our 11-20am flight to Boston, arriving local time 1-30pm. There was the usual inflight entertainment channels and mini meal, which the children wouldn’t eat.

We arrived tired and there was a delay getting through passport and identity checks, fingerprints and photos, before luggage collection. We got a very crowded bus to Central Station and then the underground to Harvard in Cambridge (a suburb of Boston). We were exhausted by this time, so got taxi to our hotel, even though it wasn’t far.

After a rest, we walked into the centre, through Harvard University campus and looked for somewhere to eat. The Coop (not Co-op) looked promising, so we went in. It turned out to be a huge book shop – to everyone’s delight. I bought a small bird book. The children had pizza and we had fruit, then leftover pizza as they were too tired to eat. Nate fell asleep and Alison had to carry him back to hotel, good job he is small and light!

We all woke up early the next day, and had breakfast at the hotel. Alison had chosen a small independent hotel, rather than a chain, to get an authentic feel for the place. We walked down to the centre again, taking photos, and had coffee sitting outside in the sunshine and watching sparrows, starlings and a grackle looking for crumbs.

We got a tube for a few stops and walked to the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) where we spent time looking round. Alison lost her cardigan en route, so started to backtrack, but Nate spotted it quite near, so we walked back to a T station which was nearer, and back to Harvard. Lunch at Waggama; Salmon, mango and rice, enjoyed some decent food again! Went back to Coop for a better look round books, and a snack, The children don’t eat much but need constant refuelling. Nate was tired, so we went back to hotel and watched a programme on sharks, while Alison and Ellie did more sight seeing and photography round the campus, which was shady with trees and had lots of colourful chairs randomly arranged. Early night again, as we were still on UK time.
