Reasons for trip

This is a lovely position, set above the sea in the old quarryman’s village of “Nant Gwytheryn.”:http://www.silvertraveladvisor.com/review/attraction/156232-review-nant-gwrtheyrn

When we first visited the area 35 years ago the houses were still derelict but over the years they have been restored and the village is now a Welsh Language and Heritage Centre. The cafe provides food for people staying in the village and also for day visitors.

It is a large modern building at the bottom of the village with views out across the sea. It is a bit like the Tardis inside with plenty of rooms and space. It has a very modern feel with sage blue walls, stone flag floor and pale wooden tables. Seating is a mix of chairs, benches and comfy chairs.

There is a small counter to order food which was then brought to the table for us. Being mid afternoon we wanted a cup of tea and cake. There was a choice of Victoria sponge, lemon cake, bara brith, Welsh cakes and scones. We settled for a scone each. These were large and knobbly. They weren’t too sweet and contained a reasonable amount of fruit. They were possibly a bit dry and may have been baked the previous day.

The only herbal tea was Earl Grey but a pot of hot water was provided for my tea bag. Michael had a pot of ‘proper man’s tea’. With a jug of hot water, we managed three cups each. A pot of tea and two scones came to £5.30.

They also serve soup, jacket potatoes and a range of sandwiches served with salad and coleslaw. They also serve a Sunday lunch.

Nant Gwtheryn is signed from the cross roads in Llithfaen. There is a large car park above the village which is reached down a narrow, winding road. There is more parking in the village but it does get very full. The cafe is open throughout the year and a sign in the top car park says if the cafe is open or shut.

There is some disabled parking but it is not clearly signed. Take the road above the chapel signed staff only which goes to the cafe. When we visited the two disabled bays contained what looked like a semi-permanent skip. There is full disabled access to the cafe.
