A tour of Australia and New Zealand ended with 18 days in Port Douglas, Queensland. The accommodation "By The Sea" was a charming property decorated to look like brightly coloured beach huts. Our room was comfortable with a kitchen area, a balcony and a gas barbecue on the balcony. In the reception area there were many "freebies" which could be used by the guests, beach towels, sun loungers, beach chairs, parasols, and even bicycles. Further up the road shops were charging $40 for the hire of a bike, we were able to use one at will. Cycling along nearby Four Mile Beach was exhilarating!
Being able to get a clean beach towel each day was a real bonus as well (after 2 months of travelling our own beach towels were almost preparing to walk home on their own!!! The staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was serviced every 4 days but if we wanted it done more often this was never a problem.
It is situated two buildings away from the beach and right at the end of the main street with shops and restaurants within easy walking distance.
If I ever return to Port Douglas I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. This really was an ideal spot! (And the costs were very reasonable as well).
