Unless you know it’s there, you can easily miss this National Trust property. It’s hidden away, not far from the town centre of Newton Abbot, among fields and woods, and it’s not open every day so check beforehand if you want to visit.
It’s a medieval manor house that has some very old original features that are well worth having a look at. It’s still lived in by the family that own it, so some parts are restricted, but you can see the principal rooms both upstairs and down, and explore the gardens which are very nice. It’s a quiet little backwater that is often overlooked, even by those who live in the town!
If you go, you should know that, while there is a small selection of items for sale, there is no dedicated shop as such, nor is there a cafe or toilets. Parking is via a narrow gateway just off the Totnes Road, and is on grass, so beware wet (muddy!) weather!
