Reasons for trip

If you are looking for a way to entertain young children, especially fans of Thomas, or just have a general interest in the days of steam train travel you can’t miss a visit to Bo’ness Railway. As well as Days out with Thomas (tickets make an excellent gift), they run special steam and diesel gala trips, (try the trip round the Forth), Santa specials, Halloween and Black bun events and more.

We took our grandchildren, aged four and two, for a visit but it was aThomas Event and completely sold out. My advice is, book in advance! It didn’t spoil our fun even although we didn’t get a train ride, as we visited the train museum and had fun finding all the character posters hidden around the museum. Incidentally, the museum ticket is valid for a year from purchase, a bargain for frequent visitors.

The cafe at the station provides a delicious selection of freshly cooked snacks and meals. We were intrigued by the ash stew, traditionally cooked on the shovel in the engine, but thankfully now cooked in more hygienic conditions!

There is of course a gift shop selling souvenirs. Our purchase of a Thomas flag for each child at 99p each was enough to keep them happy. We steered them clear of the guard’s whistles!

The station is accessible for buggies and wheelchairs and there is a carriage suited to any mobility problems.
