Reasons for trip

Here I was, following signposts to interesting places in the Orkney Islands. Taking the car today, I found myself at Birsay, the ancient capital of Orkney and “Earl’s Palace”:http://www.birsay.org.uk/heritage.htm#earlspalace

I parked and looked around the ‘Earl’s Palace’ and ‘St Magnus Church’.

The signs had indicated a tearoom- but the road appeared to have ended in the village with a small car park. Had I missed something?

Looking more closely, there was a another small sign indicating a tearoom and a dead-end road. Hmm, was I allowed to drive along? Nothing to lose…

Here it was, a lovely tearoom with its own car park.

Morning coffee and lovely home baking. People obviously know about Birsay Bay Tearoom and yet I felt like I’d just made a wonderful discovery. With better timing, I could have eaten lunch.

Sitting outside in the hot sunshine, I watched the sea, the birds and a few small boats. Reluctantly, I finished my coffee, paid and made my way back to the car.

What other discoveries were waiting further around the coast?
