Reasons for trip

Culture / Sightseeing

We spent two nights here during our trip to Romania. The hotel is an attractive green bulding set down a side street, a short walk from the shops of the new town and the restaurants and attractions of the old town. It has an outside sitting area with views of the surrounding wooded hills.

The reception area is small and fairly dark, possibly not as welcoming as it could be, and this could also be true for the staff. Behind is the restaurant which is full of wood panelling and wood ceiling and feels more Austrian than Romanian. It also had the original large white stove and old fashioned range.

I had a pleasant although not overlarge room overlooking the courtyard. The two single beds pushed together virtually filled the room. and there wasn’t much space either side of the bed. At least it was comfortable. There was a small work area with wide screen TV above and a single comfortable chair. A kettle was provided although only with herbal tea bags.

The bathroom had a large walk in shower. There was a plentiful supply of basic toiletries – shampoo and conditioner. The bath towel was large but not very fluffy. I appreciated the bath robe found in the wardrobe.

The breakfast was a let down with a restricted choice of cereals, disappointing fruit juice that tasted more like squash than fresh juice. The hot breakfast choice was basic and it was cold by 7.15. At least there was a reasonable selection of cold meats and cheese. Bread was sliced and felt a bit stale. There were no rolls or croissant although there were slices of sponge cake and a fruit flan one morning that looked nicer than it tasted. This was replaced the second morning with a local speciality, semolina flavoured with cinnamon and honey which was surprisingly good.

The food was spread across several different areas and it was a bit like a treasure hunt trying to find what you wanted, especially as the food had been swapped around on the second day. There were few staff around and there was no attempt to clear dirty plates.

The hotel has a lot of character, but checking prices on the internet is not cheap. It has a lot of potential but does need to up its game a bit, especially as far as breakfast is concerned. The overall verdict would be ‘could do better….’
