We finally got to travel to London at the weekend, saw the show “Anything Goes”, and had a brilliant time. Why the reference to ‘finally’? Well, we had the most accommodating hotel stay you can imagine.
The Beverley House Hotel is in Sussex Gardens near Paddington station and one I have stayed at before. It is a typical small, family-run hotel with no real * rating so not on a par with the Hilton nearby of course. But the room was a good size, big 2-single bed, and en-suite facilities. There is a lift (which is less common in these old buildings) but we were on the ground floor. The hotel has recently been redecorated and although breakfast is basic cereals/toast/ ham, cheese, boiled eggs, it is enough to keep you going with unlimited refills. The Beverley House and the sister Nayland Hotel, have only recently re-opened but many others nearby have chosen not to open yet.
The owner was there to meet us – note this is the 4th change of dates for the 2-night stay since first booked in February 2020! Every time a trip was cancelled, they arranged for the dates to be changed with no extra fee which I would not expect from every hotel chain. He was there at breakfast too and said that normally they would cater for 200 guests on Sunday morning but this week just 20. It was £180.00 for 2 nights B&B. As an easy, reasonably priced stopover in London, we will certainly stay here again. Plenty of places nearby to eat and drink – although note it was over £18.00 for two glasses of wine in one bar?!!
Travelling from west Wales on the day before the afternoon performance (on Sunday 5th September 2021) at the Barbican Theatre was ideal. I admit I was a bit wary after seeing many Facebook comments about performances being cancelled at the last minute, as I know we would not book another 2-night stay just for one show. However, it all went to plan after all.
