Reasons for trip

It’s been many, many years since we last visited this establishment. We remembered it as just being a very good pub but it’s now a Best Western Inn and has rooms too.

We stopped off for lunch on the way home from Gatwick to South Wales. From the M4 we turned off for Bath and Tormarton is just a very short distance from the motorway and the Compass is well sign posted.

On a beautiful, warm spring afternoon, it was lovely to eat in the attractive conservatory. There is also a pretty garden with a seating area but it was just a tad too chilly for sitting out there that day.

The waitress was attentive and the service was quick and efficient. However, when I ordered my lunch of tomato, basil and mozzarella cheese the basil was missing! Once I pointed this out it was rectified by the waitress who told us the chef had forgotten it. Mmmm … It caused us some amusement and hence the title of this review.

Lunch was tasty – once the basil arrived – the beers were good and the price was reasonable.

Car parking is ample but disabled access might be an issue as there are lots of steps inside leading from one bar/room to another right through to the conservatory and garden.

As the Compass is located on the edge of the Cotswolds this might be a good place for a few nights to visit Bristol and Bath and the surrounding areas, including Badminton (the Horse Trials this year are from 6th – 10th May).
