Guru Humorului is a large town in Bucovina with little to attract the tourist apart from its location. It is a good base for visiting the Painted monasteries. We spent two nights here during a trip to Romania.

The Best Western is a large hotel near the centre of Gura Humorului, overlooking the park with trees and shrubs across the busy main road.

My overall impression was of a dark hotel with a dark reception area and long dark corridors with dark wood doors.

I had a room on the fifth floor. It was a long narrow room with a small window overlooking the park. It was dark, but fortunately had good lighting.

The small double bed which would have been very snug if there were two of you was tucked away in a corner. Walls were an unattractive pale green and the furniture was very dark green that almost looked black. At the far end was a small table and chair. Near it was a small chest of drawers which was the only place to put the suitcase to keep it off the floor. The work area had a mirror above and a small flat screen TV. There was a minibar but no kettle.

The bathroom was also small with a small shower with curtain round it. Even though I was careful to keep the curtain inside the basin, the floor still got very wet. Fortunately there was a bath mat which did help mop some of it up. Toiletries were restricted to a small bar of soap and a small bottle of shampoo. The bath towel was thin and soon got wet. At least it did dry quickly too.

Breakfast was a bit basic with a poor choice of cereals, uninspiring fruit juice and no fresh fruit. There was the usual hot selection but I stuck with the cold meats and cheese. There was sliced bread for toast, rolls and croissant as well as a chocolate marble cake, which didn’t taste as dry as it looked.

This isn’t one of the most exciting hotels we’ve stopped in but is probably as good as it gets in this part of Romania.
