“Do you want to come to the ‘Be-fater’ for Daddy’s birthday?” asked Grandson Number One. How could I refuse?

The Anchor Inn is a Beefeater pub on the edge of Scunthorpe adjacent to Morrisons and the Premier Inn. The grandchildren regard it as a great treat to go there for a meal. It is a large barn of a place, without a lot of atmosphere and serving the usual Beefeater menu.

We arrived around 5.30 on a Friday night. There were a few people eating, but the place wasn’t really busy. We had to wait to be taken to our table but once there, menus were brought and orders for food and drink taken quickly. The drinks arrived and then began the very long wait for the food, and I do mean long – probably about 40 minutes. We were thankful the pub provided colouring sheets for the grandsons. Daughter did say this was the longest they have had to wait and service is usually quicker. I would hope so, as it wasn’t as if many meals were being brought out.

The grandsons chose off the children’s menu, with things like chicken nuggets and sausage and mash. They do a cheap ‘early menu’ served before 6.30, although we chose to eat off the main “menu.”:http://www.beefeater.co.uk/steak-restaurant-menu/North-Lincolnshire/Anchor-Scunthorpe.html Mains prices range from £9.49 to £21.49 for the porterhouse steak. Par for the course for Beefeater, but not when Ashby Lodge, the pub over the road is on average £5 cheaper…. There is also Morrisons cafe, McDonalds and Burger King too for anyone not wanting to pay those prices.

My first choice is always meat pie but this was a beef and cheddar pie which from the picture was a pudding rather than a pie. Instead I chose the Signature Slow Cooked Beef Chilli (£9.79) which came with basmati rice, flat bread and a small bowl of guacamole and another of sour cream and chive. The chilli was served in a separate bowl. I like chilli but this was a bit too hot and fiery for me, which masked any taste and left me with burning lips. I was thankful for the cream sauce. It was a reasonable size portion and as a bonus, the rice wasn’t overcooked. It was an OK meal but I wouldn’t rave. Reading through the menu I can’t say I was enthused….Vegetarians would be at a disadvantage too as apart from fish the only veggie choices were roast vegetable linguine, baked veggie enchiladas or a veggie burger.

The meal filled me and I was thankful I hadn’t had a starter and I didn’t want a pudding. Staff were pleasant. The plates and food were hot and the bar served the usual selection of keg beers. We were lucky as we had a 40% off voucher. I would sum it up as ‘safe’ but unexciting.
