Reasons for trip

We stayed at this very pretty 10 bedroom hotel on a Groupon package – still not cheap at £229 for just two nights with one evening meal. It was very easy to find as it was on the main A36 about 8 miles from Bath and despite it being a busy road the double glazing was very good and we were not kept awake with traffic noise. The room and bathroom were both attractive with a large comfortable bed, nice views, bathrobes, plenty of hanging room for your clothes etc. However there were a few niggles – no waste bin in the bedroom, a noisy and inefficient Dolce Gusto machine instead of a kettle ( coffee just tasted instant and it would not boil hot enough for the provided tea). The bathroom also had nice toiletries ( Penhaligan) but tied to the wall and no shower caps or body lotion etc. and the shower just dribbled on you.

The dining room was very attractive with vintage china and pleasant views, our meal was two courses with a glass of wine. As we are both vegetarian the hotel was kind enough to let us choose from the main menu which had 5 vegetarian main courses rather than the more restricted Groupon menu. My husband had a tasty but very small starter, beetroot, honey, walnuts and goats cheese in a filo basket and he had a mushroom and potato curry for his main. Again quite tasty but no naan, poppadum’s, chutney etc., rather parsimonious. I had wild mushrooms a la crème on bread with wilted spinach, okay but no other veg with it and I had a very nice crème brulee for dessert. Again this was nice but very small and no shortbread with it. We were also disappointed to find that if you booked on a Groupon voucher you were not entitled to a cooked breakfast unless you paid a further £8.95 per person and could only have continental – this was not made clear on the booking site nor on the confirmation email. To be fair the continental breakfast was very nice with a good selection of cereals, a good fresh fruit salad , fresh rolls , continental pastries, cheese etc.

It was a very pleasant stay but worth the extra money – probably not and I can’t say I would recommend people go there at these prices.
