It is quite an effort to get to this beautiful lodge, but if you plan to visit the Bale Mountain area it is THE place to stay. The journey via the Sanetti Plateau is simply stunning (and if you are lucky – and we were – with a bit of effort you will see the rare and endangered Ethiopian wolf). The welcome from Yvonne and Guy, the English owners and designers of this lodge, is extremely warm and the staff are all lovely, with some excellent and knowledgeable local guides for walks etc.

The bungalows, spread round the grounds, are beautifully furnished with stunning views over the surrounding hills/crags BUT a bit of a downside to the less sure-footed would be the pathway to these bungalows. It is very rough and uneven, and poorly lit at night due to the electricity situation. For the not-so-agile it would be best to request a room in the main building – I believe there are a few. The bar/dining area is wonderful – lit by open fires and candlelight for dinner. The food was simple but nicely cooked, with local wines included which were delicious. It’s a peaceful and relaxing spot in gorgeous surroundings, and highly recommended.
