“An Ideal Husband”:https://www.stratfordfestival.ca/WhatsOn/PlaysAndEvents/Production/An-Ideal-Husband was the first play of the season I saw this year at the Stratford Festival. Oscar Wilde is a favourite of mine and I remember seeing the 1999 movie with Rupert Everett and Jeremy Northam and was very much looking forward to seeing a stage production.
I was a bit disappointed with the first half of the play which was slow and dry (setting up the comedy to come) but the second half made up for it with more lively dialogue and action. In fairness, we saw a production early on and I hear the first half improved. One part that was consistently excellent throughout was the set and costumes – all fabulous. In any case, the moral shines through: ideals are dangerous as they are ultimately impossible to live up to.
If you’re in the area and want to check it out, the production is on at the Avon Theatre until October 28, 2018.
