This is an Independent hotel and spa on the edge of Pitlochry.

I like my Scottish country hotels Scottish – if you’ve got that schtick then why not work it? Too many of them now are chain owned and it really shows that this one isn’t. It has real log fires (and plenty of them), real candles, not those stupid little LED ones that fool no one, plenty of dead deer on the walls and loads of wood and leather chairs. The Stag’s head bar is charming (but expensive). The grounds are beautiful

Dinner in the restaurant is good and in sufficient quantities although I did think that I would have had substantially more fish and chips for £13.50 in the bar. Service was variable. Breakfast was excellent.

The pool is warm, the steam room, jacuzzi and sauna are actually plenty hot! Not like the tepid stuff you find a lot of places. The gym is adequate and there is a snooker room (free), which is useful for unloading adolescents into. One criticism. There was broken glass on the floor in there for the duration of our stay.

It is not reasonable to comment on the other guests when you are reviewing a hotel, but in this case I’ll do it anyway. The adolescents who had been unloaded into the snooker room were delightful young people.

We were in a family garden room, which was massive and had a separate bath and shower room with a toilet in each. It would have slept 5, which is always useful. My brother’s family room was smaller, but it did have a little kitchen. Our room was warm and quiet.

Staff were charming. Sister in law advises the spa is lovely. There is a guest laundry, which is free! What a result! Next time I’m bringing a load with me (Joking honestly)

Went in January 16, but the drop down box in the review page won’t let me choose 2016. Will definitely go back.
