I took the Ryanair plane to Perugia last April. Perugia is only about 6 miles from Assisi, but the buses do not co-ordinate with the arrivals, therefore I got a cab to Assisi. I had booked to stay self-catering at the Anglican House in Assisi. There is an Anglican resident priest there to take care of the English church in Assisi and they let out some rooms to help with the cost. I had as single room for 20 Euros per night. It was delightful, in the middle of Assisi. The resident priest was a lovely woman and very helpful to me. I visited the Basilica of St Francis, (very impressive), and I walked to San Damiano, which is in delightful countryside. There are very good walks, as the terrain is very hilly. Bookings can be made for the accommodation through the Anglican Franciscan Friary at Hillfied in UK. For a single traveler, it was safe, beautiful and cheap.
