Reasons for trip

One of the perks of a day out is a cup of tea and a cake. The cafe can often make or break the day. We’d had a wonderful time at the National Coal Mining Museum and, tired and hungry, headed for the cafe. This is run by Asparagus Green Catering which makes a point of its green credentials and sourcing produce locally. Staff were young, enthusiastic and helpful. It was neat and clean and tables were tidied away quickly once visitors had left.

It is a large and attractive room with plenty of space between the tables. The serving hatch serves hot meals and drinks. The cakes are displayed on a separate table and you help yourself. They are home made and slices are generous. It was a difficult choice – lime and courgette with pistachio nuts or dandelion and burdock cake? Or what about carrot cake, brownie or a scone? The lime and courgette won. It was very good. Daughter said her brownie was good too!

They also do afternoon teas too – at very competitive prices.

The cafe opens early for breakfasts and serves a good range of hot food at lunchtimes. Prices are very reasonable at just less than £7 for a hot meal and looking at meals being enjoyed by people in the cafe, portion sizes are large too.

This is a place that offers good food at a good price. It definitely makes the visit!
