Reasons for trip

This is a Victorian cemetery partly abandoned in the 20th century and very overgrown, but thanks to funding from various sources, it is being rehabilitated and is a fascinating place to visit. If you are local or have local ties, it is a genuine place of rest of hundreds of Bristolians and will have family history significance. If not, you can wander among the memorials, some of which are beautiful and very ornate, and include memorials to Rajan Rammohun Roy, the “father of modern India” and George Muller, famed for founding orphanages for the abandoned children of Victorian Bristol. It’s a large site so there are several walks available (I haven’t done the same walk twice yet) and although the greater area of the cemetery is hilly, the entrance and main buildings are on the flat and wheelchair accessible. There are two chapels, Anglican and non-conformist, a small shop, garden of remembrance, crypt, small shop and excellent cafe. I am almost loathed to promote it as it is an oasis in a busy world, but I can’t keep it secret any longer, it needs to be supported! Free to visit, with small charge for occasional guided tours. FYI you can even get married in woodland there, and they also put on events and plays. A favourite place, with a quirky, gothic charm. Be aware that it closes at around 5pm (and it might be a scary place to have to overnight in an emergency!)
