Reasons for trip

Visit the bluebells while you can …

A carpet of sun-lit flowers spread through Arlington Bluebell Woods early yesterday morning. Here and there, woodland pools reflected the magical blue vista and tiny golden flowers wove a pathway through the blue at one point.

In cooler patches, a few pure white anemones remained; and delicate apple blossom framed the bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) towards the end of the main walk. The sound of birdsong lit up the soul almost as much as the flowers did. It is a lovely place to go with friends and family. And if you are visiting solo, consider a meditational walk in the quieter times of the day.

There are seven different walks to try in the 23-acre wood of ancient oak trees, including the gravelled Blue Walk. This gives excellent access to those needing mobility scooters, wheelchairs or pushchairs. Mobility scooters can be borrowed free of charge.

After your walk with nature, why not visit the large, bright café (outdoor seating is also available). You can buy delicious, homemade food cooked and served by local charities. There is also a second-hand bookshop and a barn of young animals to delight the children. Additionally, do visit Philippa and Michael’s farm shop for grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, and wonderful raised pies, among other culinary treasures.
