It depends what you like to be honest, for us it is idyllic.
To get there you go over Bealach na Bà is a winding, single track road through the mountains of the Applecross peninsula, in Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands. The historic mountain pass was built in 1822 and is engineered similarly to roads through the great mountain passes in the Alps, with very tight hairpin bends that switch back and forth up the hillside and gradients that approach 20%. It boasts the steepest ascent of any road climb in the UK, rising from sea level at Applecross to 626 metres (2,054 ft), and is the third highest road in Scotland.
The name is Scottish Gaelic for Pass of the Cattle, as it was historically used as a drovers’ road. Bealach na Ba is pronounced Bee-al-uch nu Ba(h).
The Bealach, as it is known for short, is unsuitable for learner drivers, large vehicles and motorhomes. Please use caution while travelling up and down the Bealach. The route is often impassible in winter.
Applecross is on the Nc500 route, which is now so popular. We have been going here for years. It was always that you booked ahead. Even booking 8 months ahead doesn’t guarantee you a room. The inn has been run by Judith Fish and her teamwork a long time . Link to web site see www.applecrossinn.co.uk. It is known for excellent sea food and they don’t lie. It is excellent pub food. If you are staying you have priority over tables, which does help when people are queuing out the door. Whenever we are there you chat to people quite freely, it is that sort of place. Breakfasts are also excellent.
Over the years accommodations has increased. Rooms vary in size, some rooms overlook lovely views across the Inner Sound of Raasay, to the isles of Raasay and Skye are nice when the Scottish weather stops play.
The Inn is totally dog friendly. Dogs with you all the time. There is a quite stern letter in your room about dogs, due to the fact that some dog owners have not behaved well.
It is a place where we feel at home. Walks galore around. Sitting out on the benches in the morning looking out on the bay, when the sky is blue is incredible and so relaxing
Watch out you can easily build up quite a bar and food bill 🙂
