Reasons for trip

For a combination of art and a day of sun and sand, head for Crosby Beach just north of Liverpool to see “Another Place” by Antony Gormley. The artist made 100 cast-iron statues of himself and they are planted along 2 km of the beach from the mouth of the Mersey to the River Alt at various depths in the sand, all looking out to sea. Some of the statues are covered in barnacles as they are routinely covered by the high tide while others have a bronzed finish from the sun. There are signs warning you not to go out too far as the sand is soft and it is difficult to extract yourself, not to mention dirty and potentially dangerous! We went on a glorious sunny day and were able to see the hills of Wales in the distance, the Isle of Man ferries and cargo ships plying to and fro from Liverpool and, beyond the shipping channel, the windmill farm in the distance.
