Reasons for trip

This is a National Trust property left to them by Lord Fairhaven, a wealthy American, on his death in 1966. Parts of the house include post war furnishings that I can remember from my childhood and others were designed by him to show his wonderful collections. I particularly liked the clocks but there were great tapestries, paintings and china.

There are a variety of gardens – the rose and herbaceous gardens were particularly beautiful when we visited in June but a friend went in spring and loved the hellebores. Plenty of seats are around and many paths are suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. There is also an area called Hoe Fen which we did not visit but seems excellent if you have children who are interested in wildlife. The Lode Mill was closed when we visited but should have reopened by now. The visitor centre is a modern building with a shop, restaurant and plant centre and there is plenty of parking.
