Reasons for trip

This is the best restaurant, holding two Michelin stars, at the Gleneagles Hotel.

During our annual stay at Glenmor we were offered a meal at Andrew Fairlie’s at a special price. We thought that this would be a special treat and both chose the Dégustation Menu.

Following a pleasant amuse bouche of quail eggs and pea shoots, we were served to eight courses as follows:
Crab, Cucumber, Oscietra Caviar with Grosset Polish Hill Riesling (Clare Valley, Australia, 2017)
Presse of St. Brides Farm Guinea Fowl, Foie Grass, Apricot with Domaine Ostertag Pinot Blanc (Alsace, 2017)
Roast Fillet of Stone Bass, Shellfish Hollandaise with Pieropan Soave ‘La Rocca’ (Veneto, 2016)
Ravioli of Mushroom and Truffle, Pea Velouté with Montes ‘Outer Limits’ Sauvignon (Zapallar Coast, 2018}
Home Smoked Scottish Lobster, Warm Lime & Herb Butter with Krug Grand Cuvée (Edition 166) Champagne (France, MV)
Roast Goose of Goosnargh Duck, Port, Coriander with Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur (Loire Valley, 2017)
Strawberry & Rhubarb Cremeux, Milk Ice Cream with Granges Neuves Monbazillac (South West France, 2011)
Followed by coffee and petites fours.

Service was excellent and staff were well informed. All of the courses were tasty, well balanced and well paired with wine. However, we were not impressed by the wine price for eight small glasses per person of £95. Whilst the wines were excellent, I could have bought bottles of each at a retail price total of £208 – which suggests the hotel’s mark up from wholesale of around 300%
