I booked a table in advance for our final night in Hull at “Ambiente”:https://www.ambiente-tapas.co.uk/hull
thinking tapas would make a change from fish and chips. However, on entering the huge cavernous restaurant situated on Humber Street in the old town and opposite the marina, it was obvious I needn’t have bothered. It was industrial in feel with high ceilings and large silver air conditioning pipes but also had lit candles both on the tables and dotted on high around the room. The lovely, tasteful Christmas decorations added an air of romance.
There were half a dozen booths down one side which were full of rather loud groups of four and we were pleased to be seated on the opposite side on a banquette with tables for two.
Although there was an interesting range of gins and sherry cocktails on the menu, we started with a glass of cava at the unbelievable price of £4.25 and a wheel of pintxos: a platter of white anchovy fillets, Manchego cheese and Serrano ham all served on bread and arranged around a bowl of olives.
The waitress was very good, suggesting how many dishes to order and asking if we wanted to hold off on ordering the tapas until we’d finished our nibbles.
The menu had a good selection of both hot and cold tapas. We chose four dishes: chorizo and patatas in a thick sticky balsamic sauce, albondigas (three meatballs in a light, fresh Thai-style sauce), croquetas full of pulled pork which were squidgy and delicious and finally, crunchy green beans which were scattered with sun dried tomatoes and pine nuts. Having seen all the delicious sauces, we ordered bread which came as four large squares of delicious focaccia and balsamic and oil. We were both too full for pudding.
A bottle of white wine was £15 making our bill a reasonable £66, with no automatic service included.
