Reasons for trip

All Saints’ Church is a lovely old church surrounded by its churchyard in the grounds of “Hinton Ampner House”:http://wasleys.org.uk/eleanor/stately_homes_castles/england/south/hinton_ampner/index.html in Hampshire.

Constructed of flint with stone corners, it was built in the C13th on the foundations of an earlier Saxon church. The timber bell chamber is typical of small churches in this part of the country. It was restored in the C19th when the vestry was added. The stained glass windows at the east end were added in 1970.

Inside, it is a simple parish church with whitewashed walls, wood ceiling and a Jacobean pulpit. At the back by the door is the C19th font on marble legs.

The original C13th double piscina and sedilia are on the south wall of the chancel although the panelling behind the altar is C17th. On the north wall of the chancel is a painted marble and alabaster memorial to the young Thomas Stewkeley, who died in 1638 and whose family lived in Hinton Ampner house.

Apparently the splendid memorial in the nave to Sir John Trott and his wife Elizabeth was moved here from Laverstoke Church, twenty miles away.

The church is open daily. It can either be approached through the grounds of Hinton Ampner house, where there is a lot of parking or along Hinton Hill off Petersfield Road to the east of the house. The post code is SO24 0LA and the grid reference is SU 597275.
