Reasons for trip

This hadn’t been on my list of churches to visit. Talking to a family at “Little Stoneham Church,”:http://wasleys.org.uk/eleanor/churches/england/suffolk/suffolk_three/stoneham_parva/index.html they said we really must visit Crowfield as it was Saxon. We were given directions and set off to find it.

It is set off the Roman road that runs between A1120 at Pettaugh and Coddenham. Apart from a large moated manor house there is no other habitation around. We found somewhere to park and set off to find the church. Our hearts sank when we saw the noticeboard with a notice saying “Open Saturdays and Sundays in winter 10-3”. It was a Tuesday.

Having got this far we decided to continue down the path to the church. Northing had prepared us for the surprise of a timber frame chancel and porch, the only timber frame church in Suffolk. The small nave is flint with a steep tiled roof and a small open steeple in the centre of the roof.

We tried the door but it was locked. We tried peering through the windows but weren’t able to see much of the inside. We regretted not being able to gain access … another time maybe.
