I suspect that, like many others, I thought of Alicante simply as somewhere to land on the way to Benidorm, was I wrong!
Being a keen flight price watcher, I spotted flights to Alicante for £20 return from Newcastle a few weeks before Christmas. How could anyone miss a chance like that?
It was so easy, take the lift to the second floor in the airport, the No. 6 bus does a circular route to the city centre, we booked the Eurostars Lucendum hotel at a bargain £53 a night, room only, really comfortable, in the main shopping area, opposite the bus stop.
We were so impressed with the tree-lined streets, lovely squares and quality shops.
The very lively old town was a pleasure to visit, as was the castle.
A tip for future visitors: The entrance to the castle is on the dual carriageway which runs parallel to the sea, you walk through a long tunnel to a lift, so strange as it looks nowhere near the castle! Even better, take your passport if you are a ‘senior’ (hate Americanisms!) for free entrance!
