Visiting Tenerife has one great advantage – there is very little reason to move from your hotel or complex as it is like being on the dark side of the moon. This has its advantages as you do not feel guilty about doing nothing. The fact of the matter is, despite its bleakness, Tenerife at just over four hours flying from the UK is guaranteed sunshine in deep mid winter – all the more reason for choosing a really good hotel.
The five star Abama Resort fits the bill. It is a sprawling complex with golf, tennis, swimming pools and spas all of which are great. If your budget extends to a small suite, the rooms are truly wonderful. The one big letdown at the hotel is the food. In any of the seven restaurants the food is uniformly average, not terrible, just average. We did not try the one star Michelin, but everything else from the breakfast buffet to the poolside bar to the specialist Italian restaurant leave a good bit to be desired. It is a great pity because the hotel is in a great location and fits the Tenerife bill in all other respects.
