Monty Python’s Spamalot was one of the plays put on at the Avon Theatre in downtown Stratford last season. One evening Eric Idle surprised the audience by joining the cast for the finale but we missed that. It is definitely an infectious show. As I’m writing this, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life has settled in my mind as an ear worm.
I wasn’t sure if this musical would live up to the hype, but it did. I mistakenly thought the show was shorter than other shows last season, but it wasn’t. It’s just such a fast-paced show that it was over before I knew it and it was a lot of fun.
My sister and I decided to get tickets at the last minute and were able to get rush tickets a couple of hours before the show – always a good deal. We also lucked out by being able to find a spot in the Cooper parking lot which is free. From there it is a few minutes’ walk to the theatre on Downie Street. The Avon Theatre is larger than the Studio Theatre that is around the corner but is smaller than the main Festival Theatre and Tom Patterson Theatre that are down by the water.
In a nod to the production, The Livery Yard across the road from the theatre paid homage to the show in their window.
