With musical theatre being dominated by juke box shows these past few years, it’s refreshing to see this glorious revival of Michael Bennett’s ‘A Chorus Line’ intact with its original choreography and musical numbers. Having seen the original productions both in the West End and on Broadway and John Breglio’s 2006 revival on Broadway this stands up there with the best of them. From the high octane ‘I Hope I Get it’ opening to the poignant rendition of ‘What I did for Love’ this show grips you by the throat and doesn’t let go till the blacked out stage after the Gold costumed finale which sees the entire cast anonymously back in the line after each telling their own story, some funny and some emotional. There are indeed stand out performances but would be churlish to pick them out as this is an ensemble ‘Master Class of Musical Theatre’ and that is what it should remain. What this particular production is, is a wonderful tribute to the late Michael Bennett and Marvin Hamlisch, how chuffed they would be that their legendary show is ensconced at the most famous theatre in the world.
