85 Sky Tower Hotel was described by our travel agent as ‘not the most interesting hotel you will ever stay in, but the best option in Kaohsiung’.

We would disagree for the following 10 reasons:
1. I’ve never slept on the 59th floor of any building (reception and rooms start on the 39th floor) – we were lucky to get a corner room with both harbour and city views
2. Perhaps somewhat disconcertingly, I’ve never had a smoke hood in my room
3. The bathroom was of a good size with separate shower and WC.
4. I didn’t need an adaptor for charging my phone and laptop.
5. The Sky Lounge, 39th floor, offered a great range of food and drinks all with tremendous night views.
6. I’ve never visited a loo before where the instructions on the flushing system had to be read first to understand how to use it – there were two levers rather graphically described as for a “urine flush” and “stool flush”.
7. You can never get lost, because you’re staying in the tallest building in town.
8. Its location is really convenient for the MRT (tube).
9. There’s a huge buffet breakfast and you’re given a quirky little sign for the table saying ‘this table is occupied’ which you turn over to ’this table can be cleared’ when you leave.
10. They do a mean dry martini.

My only gripe is that even as a guest, you’re charged to go up to the Observation Floor on the 74th floor. Although it was only NT$160 each (£3.50), I did find it a little galling so contented myself with the view from my room.
