We have had great food and good nights in many places (including 450). We have had taster nights in a few places and enjoyed them. This was exceptional and different. The food was superb of course, Cullen Skink with poached egg, Mushroom Tortellini with Spiced Broth, Lamb and Haggis with Semolina, Chocolate Torte with Raspberries; but you’d expect that and point a possible link with Scotland. This is where the differences lie. The Whiskys/Whiskeys were from round the world including Japan and India. The way the tables were laid out and the drinks staged, it was more like a social event. Complete strangers were comparing, debating and discussing their favourites, sometimes the feedback was serious, sometimes funny but everybody participated. We are perhaps slightly biased as we have eaten here several times before; but this was a step up. Food theatre is one thing, but bringing disparate personalities together and uniting them in enjoying the food, the drink, the atmosphere and the whole night is magic. This separates the places who rely on “brand” or fashion and those who constantly strive to improve and innovate.
We are returning to 450 this week for our anniversary. I will not be reviewing as it is a very personal night and I could not be sure of being dispassionate and fair.
