Vecchia Roma is a hugely popular family restaurant which never seems to change. That’s part of its charm – whether the last visit was a month or a year ago, there’s always the same effusive welcome from the lovely and ageless Adolfo, the buffet table laden with starters, the main menu of traditional roasts, and the legendary dessert trolley where Italian trifle jostles for place with chocolate mousses, fruit salad, and all manner of pleasures for a sweet tooth.

It’s an ideal restaurant to take older relatives because they will not feel out of place. In fact the average age is probably around 60-70 years on a typical Sunday lunchtime (3 courses for around £17). Extended families are everywhere with grandparents and grandchildren made to feel equally welcome – just like being in Italy.

If it’s a birthday, let them know in advance, and the waitors will arrive in formation bearing a large slice of trifle with a sparkler candle lit up, and Happy Birthday sounding through all the speakers as everyone cranes from their table to see who is celebrating.

Always book in advance for Sunday lunch, and make reservations early for mother’s day. The chairs may be a bit tired, and the crockery could do with updating, but go for the experience, the dessert trolley, the welcome and the fact that you can walk it off afterwards with a brisk stroll through Hampton Court Palace gardens. Recommended.
