Just home from Albufeira where we have stayed several times. We stayed at Hotel Apartamentos Alagoamar in self catering accommodation. These apartments are located between the Old Town and the Strip and right next door to a taxi rank and a large supermarket, comparable to a Tesco or Sainsbury, which the locals use. The Old Town is lovely but I would avoid the Strip at Monte Choro which is full of drunks etc. A taxi from our apartment cost between 3-4 euros into the old town where you can find lots of restaurants offering 'tourist' menus all inclusive for between 10 and 15 euros. The beach is beautiful and clean and we took a boat trip out to see the coastline, caves and Dolphins. This cost 30 euros each and was fabulous, although you need a jacket to keep warm. The weather was as hot as 30* and still is at the moment, although there is a lovely breeze to keep you cool. The evenings are normally warm too at this time of year, but not hot. We do not particularly like the Marina area which is to the west as it seems remote from everything Portugese. A lot of the streets are cobbled which may be a problem for those with walking difficulties. There is an escalator and a lift from the beach up to the higher areas surrounding the Old Town. The area is popular with English, Irish, Scottish and Scandinavian people and we found lots of small friendly bars to visit – particularly of note for us was Shellys on the way into the Old Town. Drinks are reasonable – a pint of lager 2.5 Euros, a pint of Bitter 3.5 Euros, Vodka etc with a mixer about 4 euros. Transfers from the airport at Faro take about 40 minutes and cost about 60 euros return. All in all we absolutely love the area with its winter sun and relaxed way of life. There is a market in the old town, lots of bars and restaurants to choose from, a beautiful beach to walk along, warm sea and cheaper than Spain!
