‘Must-See Theatre. A Deserved West End Triumph For One Of Britain’s Greatest Playwrights’
The Telegraph
Inspired by real events, Retrograde is an ‘instant classic’ (Time Out) from award-winning writer Ryan Calais Cameron (For Black Boys…).
This alarmingly timely and ‘wickedly funny 90 minutes’ (The Standard) captures a pivotal moment in the life of trailblazing actor Sidney Poitier.
Hollywood’s so-called Golden Age. Ten years before becoming the first Black man to win an Oscar, a young Sidney Poitier arrives to sign a life-changing contract that could make him a star. But there’s a catch. As he becomes entangled in events larger than he imagined, Sidney is forced to make an impossible choice – one that will reshape his future, the Civil Rights Movement, and the soul of a nation.
Backed by double Oscar and BAFTA nominee Colman Domingo as producer, Amit Sharma’s ‘perfectly pitched production’ (Independent) stars Ivanno Jeremiah, Stanley Townsend and Oliver Johnstone as ‘an ensemble operating at its peak’ (WhatsOnStage).
Exploring integrity, betrayal, and the personal cost of success, Retrograde asks what would you sacrifice to achieve your dream?
Retrograde is playing at the Apollo Theatre until Saturday 14 June 2025 – Tickets from £20. Book Now at Nimaxtheatres.com.

Shoot to Kill, which is an amazing thriller.
Greenways, Agatha Christie’s holiday home, is a super day out. Beautiful views, fascinating history all good.
“The Defiant Ones”, with Tony Curtis-I loved Tony Curtis!!
Has to guess who’s coming to dinner so radical at it’s time
“To Sir With Love”, it moved me to tears and he was absolutely perfect for the role.
Shoot to Kill -This is an action packed thriller and in my opinion, one of his best.
Lovely prizes as usual
My favourite film is Lilies of the Field, because it shows how people’s attitudes change over time and is such a feel good film as everyone pulls together to achieve a goal.
My favourite film. Is To Sir with love
My favourite Sidney Poitier film is Guess who’s coming to dinner. Highlighting the prejudices prevalent at that time which reminds us how NOT to think.
In the Heat of the Night because of the tension running through the film between Sidney Poitier & Rod Steiger.
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. I love romcoms and the story behind this was uplifting and progressive.
Favourite Sidney Poitier film: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.
One of the few early films to show interracial marriage in a positive light. Interracial marriage was still illegal in seventeen American States until June, 1967, six months before this film was released.
Great performance by Poitier and, of course, other great actors Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. This was Tracy’s final role. He died just after the completion of the movie.
My favourite is ‘look who’s coming to dinner’, it was my first exposure to racial prejudice as a young white female. Sidney Poitiers performance was moving and powerful, the films message stayed with me ever since.
In the heat of the night
Guess whose coming to dinner?
It highlighted the race problems in the states and made you question your own tjoughts and ideas
I love the theatre but don’t get to go as often as I would like to 🙁
Two favourites for me – To sir with love and Guess who’s coming to dinner.
David and Lisa – unique and beautiful story
I believe the two Sidney Poitier films – ‘Guess who’s coming to dinner’ and ‘To sir with love’ were released in 1967. This was a significant year for me as that was when I went to University and left home. I enjoyed the extra freedom and access to more films and music events. These two films made an impact and opened my mind to wider ethical and political issues. Sidney Poitier was a brilliant and convincing actor and, of course, was very good looking and attractive!
The Heat Of The Night
It is excellent story and groundbreaking on so many levels, to think that when Mr Tibbs slaps the white guy back it was a big shocking thing. It is a classic and one of those films I can watch again and again.
I believe the two Sidney Poitier films, ‘Guess who’s coming to dinner’ and ‘To Sir with Love’ both came out in 1967. This was a significant year for me as it was the time I left home and went to University. I had the freedom to go out and about as I wished, and gave me easier access to more films and music. These two films made me think about wider political and ethical issues and really stuck in my mind. Sidney Poitier was, of course, a wonderful, convincing actor, as well as being very good looking and attractive!
My favorite Sidney Poitier film is Liliies of the Field which was just such a feel good story
To sir with Love
“In the Heat of the Night” — possibly the first ‘serious’ movie I ever saw, a stunning film, outlining America’s horrendous issues with the racist South, great performances from Poitier & Rod Steiger, and deservedly won a mass of awards. It really put director Norman Jewison on the map, he also made The Cincinnati Kid, The Thomas Crown Affair (the original, famed for its unusual split-screen sequences), Fiddler On The Roof & Moonstruck.
To Sir With Love
…because it’s an absolute classic!
In The Heat of The Night. My first Poitier film- Loved the way he dealt with thercist police!
We had a fabulous day out at Hever Castle. The castle itself was interesting and the gardens were truly amazing. Beautifully manicured lawns in walled/hedged sections, each on different from the next. Breathtaking!
To Sir With Love, the all-time classic coming of age movie.
To Sir, with Love – a British film that deals with issues in a secondary school in the East End of London
To Sir With Love. A brilliant performance from Poitier. As many of his films broke new ground, he had to find his own style, and certainly achieved that.
The defiant ones 1958 when he was shackled to tony Curtis as they try to flee fight and eventually cooperate in a bid to evade recapture I found it really gripping and both excellent actors
A warm December. I love the Romance.
My favourite Sidney Poitier film is ‘In the Heat of the Night’x
To Sir with love
A must watch is David and Lisa. Powerful, and relatable
For me, it has to be ‘Guess who’s Coming to Dinner.’ It made such a statement about America (and here!) In to 60s. The film had depth and wit and was a real look at prejudice and how we judge others on appearance, not achievement. I wonder how much has changed since then?
Guess who’s coming to dinner
Favourite film: “To Sir with Love”. Could really relate to this and it was good to see Lulu in the cast.
To Sir With Love Brings back happy memories of my long teaching career thank you
it has to be ” Guess who’s coming to dinner “
In the Heat of The Night was a classic but would love to see a play live!
Think Poitier is great and it would be marvellous to see his life played out on stage

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner makes you realise how far we have com, ideal to show the youth of today
In the Heat of the Night and To Sir with Love are both amazing in their different ways. And Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? All fabulous. I’d love to see this new play.
Poitier . A class actor & director.
To Sir, With Love
Takes me back to those exciting teen days
I love In the Heat of the Night, amazing performance not just by Poitier, but also Rod Steiger, well written. Well directed and superbly acted!
My favourite film is To Sir With Love x
My favourite film was To Sir with Love
Think it’s an independent short called something
like ‘ Sidney’s chair’.
Or maybe I’m dreaming.
Guess who’s coming to dinner is a classic and showcases the difficulties facing interracial couples in the sixties. We’ve come a long way. Would love to win tickets to Retrograde
Got to be Guess who’s coming to dinner. So interesting to look back on views on interracial marriage and acknowledge how far we have come. Would love to see Retrograde. Sydney Poitier was a trailblazer
Yes please
I am commenting on a recent holiday I have done to Sri Lanka with a company called All Points East. The 14-day tour called Sri Lanka: World Heritage Tour started and finished in Columbo. This tour did a circular route from North to South, going to game parks, temples, a tea estate and beaches. The advantage of this tour was that it was definitely a small group tour, comprising only 11 people. Much better than another tour I have done recently to South Africa with another company where there were 33 people crammed onto a coach!! Other tours I have dione with All Points East are Vietnam (4 People) and Borneo (6 people).
Wouth love to win tickets to Retrograde. Linda
The ‘To Sir With Love’ as the power of an inspirational teacher on his pupils struck a personal chord
I can highly recommend a tour to Sri Lanka by a company called All Points East. The tour called Sri Lanka: World Heritage Tour was a 14-day tour, flying in and out of Columbo and then doing a circular route in Sri Lanka initially to the North and then South and up to Columbo. The advantage of the tours with All Points East is that they are definitely small group tours – on this tour there were 11 people only. On other tours with All Points East I have done there were four people to Vietnam and Cambodia and six people to Indonesia. Definitely much more fun being on small group tours than 33 people crammed on a bus on another tour I have done recently to South Africa with another tour company!!
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner a pivotal moment in acceptance of who people are not what they look like.
The Defiant Ones – love how its a story of overcoming barriers and allowing bonds to grow.
‘To sir with love is’ my favourite.

My favourite Sidney Poitier film is In The Heat Of The Night. I saw it first as a young girl and its depiction of racism has stayed with me. My husband (who was black) always hated Rod Steiger after watching this film!
‘To Sir with Love’ because of the issues that it brought up and because I was just starting out in adult life and the film reminds me so much of the wonderful time we had in the 60’s!
In the Heat of the Night – Has the world really changed?
They call me Mr Tibbs! A good detective investigator.
My favourite Sidney Poitier movie has to be In The Heat of The Night which I grew up watching in my childhood and inspired me to be part of the civil rights movement
Some very good prizes
‘In the Heat of the Night’
Powerful film and great performance from Poitier
