Earlier this year, Churchill was named one of Time magazine’s great places to visit in 2023. Based in Northern Manitoba, the town is known “for its stunning multi-coloured aurora borealis, lumbering white polar bears, vocal beluga whales, and more.”
And, back in April, Churchill was again thrust into the limelight on the BBC’s ‘Race Across The World’, as the remote outpost—set on Hudson Bay—was visited by the contestants on the fourth leg of their journey.
Jeremy Timms, Managing Director of Frontier Canada, says, “Churchill is certainly deserving of its bucket list status. There are few things that can match the truly awe-inspiring experience of coming face-to-face with the magnificent polar bear, but from the safety of a Tundra Buggy, of course!”
A sub-arctic safari in what is often dubbed the “Polar Bear Capital of the World” is a major draw for wildlife enthusiasts, and the seasons play a significant part in what you might see.
Visit in the summer, when flowers, birds, and polar bears dot the landscape and beluga whales swim in the cool waters just offshore, or go from September to November, when the heavenly spectacle of the Northern lights transforms the tundra buggy experience from fascinating to otherworldly. Visible for about 300 nights a year, in the run up to Solar 25, the dancing lights are about to become even more of a stellar sight, with solar activity currently ramping up toward an 11-year peak.
Want to witness the Great Polar Bear Migration? Each autumn, polar bears gather along the shores of Hudson Bay, waiting for the ice to form after months of summer melt.
Jeremy Timms says, “A fabulous time to visit, when the polar bears gather in the coastal areas around Cape Churchill in preparation for their Arctic hunting season, it is like watching your own personal David Attenborough documentary.”
Five-night ‘Polar Bears in Churchill Enthusiast’ from £5,889pp (two sharing) including Air Canada flights, 2 nights Winnipeg, 3 nights Churchill and 2 full days on the Tundra Buggy.
