A cool Nordic city: capital of one of the happiest nations on earth
WHY VISIT COPHENHAGEN
Relaxed atmosphere
The Danes are so very laid back and cheery. In a city that feels spacious and is criss-crossed by rivers and canals, it’s easy to see why. Life is enjoyed outside, with benches and tables in all the many squares and plazas, with cafés surrounding them. Bicycles rule here, with fabulous cycle paths and easy to hire bikes. It’s leisurely with purpose.
WHAT TO SEE IN COPENHAGEN
Nyhavn is a must for a wander: tree lined streets beside the canals. Yes, it is a bit touristy however locals go there too. Take a canal boat ride to get a great overview of the city, passing under head-grazingly low bridges. Get a glimpse of the Little Mermaid who is just about human size. Visit Christianshavn, filled within gorgeous apartment buildings beside marinas on the canals and Freetown Christiania, an alternative, bohemian artistic district which is self-regulating.
WHAT TO EAT IN COPENHAGEN
It’s got to be sea food every time, including oysters and salmon of every kind. Smørrebrød – open rye bread sandwiches – topped with pickled herrings, eggs, roast beef, the perfect snack. Danes love hot dogs, there are stands across Copenhagen for a fast feast. Stegt flæsk – crispy pork with parsley sauce and potatoes is considered the national dish. Team all of these with beer from a craft brewery or a shot of snaps.
DON’T MISS
Tivoli Gardens, one of the world’s oldest fairgrounds, said to have inspired Walt Disney for his theme Parks. The Meatpacking District is a trendy lively hotspot, now home to great restaurants and the V1 Gallery in the industrial buildings. For history, try the Amalienborg Palace, a complex of four royal residences, one housing a museum and watch the changing of the guard at noon.
DAY TRIP
Take the train from the Central Station to Helsingør to visit Shakespeare’s Elsinore and Hamlet’s castle. An impressive double moated fortress on the sea.
