Just You – Touring Croatia by Jan Leeming

Jan Leeming in Croatia As one of Just You’s most popular destinations I was so excited to be heading to Croatia, a region with an abundance of history, culture and beauty. Arriving at dusk, it was not until the morning that we were taken aback by the magnificence of Croatia – a mountainous country clinging to a sea dotted with islands.

Our first trip was to Zadar, located on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, where after the World War II clear up, a Roman Forum was discovered in front of the 9th Century Pre-Romanesque Church of St. Donatus, which itself has been constructed using much ‘debris’ from Roman times. Recycling is timeless! The Sea Organ of Zadar, a construction of pipes under the sea where wind and waves play a somewhat haunting tune, is a truly captivating experience.

Waterfalls at Krka National Park Krka National Park was our next port of call, with its spectacular major waterfall, surrounded by little ones all around.

For me, one of the best things about travelling with Just You is spending time with like-minded people and it was wonderful walking through the park sharing stories with my new friends. Our Tour Manager, Alen, kept the group entertained throughout with his wealth of historical information.

Twenty years ago I visited Split and was keen to see the Diocletian Palace again. Since then, much more of the Palace has been excavated and our guide took us on a walk through the ‘subterranean’ rooms.

Split - view of hills from top of Belfry

The panoramic views from the belfry of the Cathedral of St. Domnius were breath-taking, if you climbed 366 steps, which I determinedly did, with pride in my success.

En route to Dubrovnik Reaching the half-way point of the tour, we were off to Dubrovnik, founded in the 6th century and with a fascinating history. Back in the 14th century, it  became one of the most important mercantile and maritime centres on the Mediterranean.

A real highlight was sailing to the islands of Brac and Hvar, where we had a brief stop in one of the smallest natural harbours you are ever likely to encounter. In true Just You adventurous spirit, some of us were determined to get our swimsuits wet, so I can now say I’ve swum in the Adriatic.

Mostar Our final day was spent in Mostar, it was here in the 1990’s during the Bosnian War the historic Stari Most Bridge was blown up. It was re-built with local materials using Ottoman construction techniques, stones from local quarries and original material recovered by Hungarian army divers from the river.

An uplifting end to a wonderful trip!

  1. I want to go on aJust You holiday but would have appreciated more information of the general age of the travellers, whether meet and greet were good, these things matter to those considering going solo
