Holidays for all the generations together

Silver Travel Advisor

Multi generational holidaysWhat could be more fun than spending quality time together, as a family, on holiday? This can be a real opportunity to create memories that will last a very long time, and photos and videos will serve as a fabulous, sometimes hilarious, reminder of what everyone has shared together.

A few days away in the UK

A long weekend or half term holiday can be a really excellent way to get back to nature in a new part of the UK, staying in a log cabin in the forest, with a giant outdoor ‘playground’ outside to enjoy.  Cycling, walking and kayaking are good ways to get out and find out more about the natural world.  Evenings together, by a cosy log burner with a movie, or in a hot tub during warmer months allow family bonds to be strengthened. And most importantly, lots of fun to be enjoyed. This is a super home from home style of holiday, where even the dog can come too!

Holiday cottages Whitbyhave long been favourites, with a huge choice available throughout the country.  Larger houses are ideal for Christmas or New Year celebrations, not many of us can happily sleep 14 people at home. And in warmer months, get right away into the countryside for time together or stay beside the sea with instant beach access; take a picnic, a rug and a windbreak.

You might prefer a location with more entertainment and loads to do – swimming pools, sports, bars and restaurants – so why not head to the south coast to a holiday village that is perfectly designed to keep the entire team busy! With a great array of accommodation options.

A European sunshine break

Think long lazy hours, out by the pool, relaxing after a day exploring little towns or visiting local attractions. Your family might prefer 4-star or 5-star hotels along with all the pampering and service these offer, or if you like to be together as a group, a villa or maybe two, (space for Granny & Grandpa perhaps) would suit you well, especially if you’re keen to totally do your own thing, with regard to meals or maybe staying in your PJs all day! A villa in CroatiaThe Greek islands are favourites for many families, with pretty beaches, sailing, tennis and family-friendly tavernas if you decide to eat out. Italy and France provide a good range of properties too, from those sleeping six to those sleeping twenty six! Brilliant for a special birthday or anniversary.

There are many holiday parcs across Europe, fabulous for everyone, from the older generation, right down to tiny toddlers. There will be lots of entertainment on offer: you can do as little or much as you want. You could stay in apartments, tents or mobile homes, all well-equipped and ideal for a break together. Find a location that works for all your interests – within striking distance of a city, close to the sea or in the deepest countryside. Spend mellow moments in the sunshine, leaving the bustle of day life behind.

Activities together

Family activitiesHow about a cycling holiday for the entire family, lycra-clad or otherwise! Bikes are now so diverse that you really can get everyone in the saddle – electric pedal power is all the rage and takes the hard work out of what’s an otherwise exceptionally jolly way have a holiday. Younger children can ride on hook-up bikes, which can de-couple for a bit of independence at times. This is about shared experiences and a sense of well-being that comes from outdoor exercise.

In the lakes and mountains of Europe, the opportunities for mountain biking, kayaking and canoeing are splendid, should those be activities members of your family like. You can of course, spend the day relaxing, whilst the enthusiastic and energetic bound about, returning to a comfortable hotel, and your cheery welcome!

Cruises for all

Ships these days are rather like magical small resorts with everyone provided for – climbing walls, surf machines, race tracks and tennis courts (not full size) for the lively; libraries, lectures, art galleries and cookery demonstrations for the curious. Grand Plaza- Celebrity Cruises As well as the on-shore excursions of course. And as for dining options – you can eat yourselves around the world! Buffets, Italian pizza and pasta eateries, the finest of French dining, Japanese sushi bars, British fish and chips, first-class Indian restaurants and American steak houses.

The joy of cruising is that you’ll all find things of interest to do, even if it’s reading (snoozing?) on deck, perhaps going your separate ways during the day and meeting up in the evening for dinner, dancing, a quiz, theatre show or late-night cabaret. There is never a dull moment.

Extra special experiences

The list could be endless here, however there are a few, really worth thinking about for those moments which deserve celebrating and sharing:

Sophisticated capital city break

Safaris in Africa

Self-drive trips in America

Exploring Borneo
