Have you ever stopped to wonder what an important role food plays in our lives? Food brings friends and families together; food represents culture, traditions and holidays. Food is also one of the things people most look forward to when travelling.
Is there anything more wonderful than nibbling on a warm, buttery croissant fresh out of the oven in a tiny cafe in Paris? Or digging into a delicious slice of knefeh while enjoying your holiday to Egypt?
There are so many wonderful and diverse dishes out there that it is almost impossible to pick just one thing and tag it as THE best food in the world, so here is a list of 6 of our top favourites.
1. Italian Cuisine
Perhaps the most famous cuisine of all (who hasn’t heard of pasta or pizza?), Italian cuisine first made an appearance way back when around the 4th century and remains a favourite throughout the world to this day. It’s amazing what can be done with a little bit of oil, some pasta and fresh herbs. As for desserts, just thinking about creamy gelato, tiramisu or moist, crumbly cheesecake is enough to make you want to rush to your nearest Italian bakery.
Why is it so popular? Because it’s simple to prepare and you can almost never go wrong with Italian.
2. Japanese Cuisine
Sushi has been around for hundreds of years but only recently has it gained such widespread popularity and demand. The original sushi has evolved a lot over time and has been adapted to suit our particular palettesbecoming a much-loved cuisine. Although classy and expensive sushi bars are not only immensely popular today but is very much a ‘trendy’ thing to do, in the past it was largely ignored and shunned by people whosaw sushi as being ‘icky’.
Why is it so popular? It’s honestly hard to explain why people love and crave raw fish, sashimi and caviar. But they do.
3. Middle-Eastern Cuisine
Middle-Eastern food is delicious and very similar to Greek food. Popular meals consist of grilled kebabs, fluffy, fragrant rice, fresh salad drizzled with some oil, fried or baked fish and garlic potatoes. This is another cuisine that is fast becoming popular throughout the world.
Shawarma sandwiches anyone?
4. Indian Cuisine
Possibly one of the more complicated cuisines as most recipes call for dozens of random spices which may seem insignificant but can alter the taste of your entire meal. If you have the patience to cook it, you can be rewarded with a spicy and exotic meal of butter chicken or lamb biryani. Or you could always just pop into your nearest Indian restaurant (they can be found everywhere) and get your fill there. Who knew that lentils could be so good?
5. Mexican Cuisine
It’s the cuisine that has the perfect blend of spice and zest. Burritos, tacos, chilli and enchiladas are extremely healthy, filling and versatile dishes since you can make them out of almost anything whether its meat, fish or veggies.
Why is it so popular? Because the dishes are not only beautiful to look at with their vibrant colours but they are absolutely scrumptious as well and easy to make.
6. American Cuisine
Ok so it’s not exactly a ‘cuisine’ of sorts but everyone eats it all the time. Fried chicken, baked potatoes, burgers, potato salads, poutine (that extremely fattening concoction of fries, cheese curds and gravy) can all be lumped under the category of “American Cuisine”. Although I’m sure that each dish has its’ roots in other ancient cultures which has steadily been modified until it is what it is today.
Why is it so popular? Because greasy, fried comfort food is always good!
