Florida, the Year-Round Sunshine Destination

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Florida is one of the world’s most desirable holiday destinations and attracts almost 90 million visitors each year. World class beaches, vibrant cities and stunning national parks – there’s a lot more to see in Florida than just theme parks for the grandkids!

Neither does it matter which season you choose to visit as the temperature rarely dips below 60°F, with summer temperatures reaching 82°F. The year-round sunny weather means that outdoor activities are available whenever you wish.

Touring the Everglades and tropical islands, enjoying golf on one of the 1,250 courses or touring the many museums and historic houses are just some of the highlights available on Florida holidays. Here are a few ideas of where to stay and what to do on your next trip to the Sunshine State.

Where to stay

Florida is a state that is geared towards visitors and there will be no shortage of excellent accommodation at value-for-money prices. However, Florida is also an immense area covering 58,664 square miles and the second largest US state.

Choosing where to stay should therefore come down to your holiday activity tastes but cities such as Orlando can make a good central base. Staying in Orlando means you can take also day trips to beach locations such as West Palm Beach and the famous museums of St Petersburg.

Miami attractions

Miami Miami is home to some of the world’s most famous beaches but it’s also a good place to take a day tour around the amazing Everglades National Park, where there are walking trails for the more energetic, while the airboat trips are perfect for a more relaxing tour.

On the cultural side, if you are a fan of art deco then the colourful and famous buildings along Ocean Drive will be a definite attraction, and the Vizcaya Museum is a beautiful Italian-style mansion that’s certainly worth a tour. Miami is also home to some of the best nightlife in the world, but it’s not just clubbing: first-class restaurants like The Forge and every possible live entertainment you could imagine, from classical concerts to jazz bands.

Tour the Florida Keys

Florida Keys If you are holidaying in Miami or anywhere in South Florida a trip to the Florida Keys should be included on your itinerary. The Florida Keys are the stuff of legend and these tropical islands feature white sands beaches and the most beautiful sunsets in the world. You can easily take drive or a mini cruise from Miami to islands such as Key West, Key Largo and Big Pine Key. Spend some time in Hemmingway’s favourite bar Sloppy Joes, watch the famous sunsets at Sunset Pier or swim with the dolphins: the Florida Keys has it all.

In addition, there are plenty of other places that are considered ‘senior-friendly’; from the sophisticated resorts like Fort Lauderdale, to the peaceful central haven of Highlands Hammock State Park, Florida really does cater for every age group.
