Seven highlights of a visit to Mexico

There are few destinations that boast such a broad and diverse array of wonderful tourist attractions as Mexico. From relaxing beach-front locales to invigorating outdoor adventures, the country is rich in beauty, culture and experiences to savour.

Here are some of the places to visit which are recommended for a Mexican adventure.

Temple of Winds Go Scuba Diving in Cozumel

With some of the warmest and clearest waters in the Caribbean Sea, Cozumel Island is a haven for all manner of watersports. But it’s Scuba diving where it truly excels. With the finest reefs in the western hemisphere, and some of the best visibility in the world, divers from all over the globe come to Cozumel. With a relaxed blend of the Caribbean/Mexican culture and fine Mayan ruins to explore, the scenic island is worth visiting above water, too!

Visit the Sumidero Canyon in Chiapas

Sumidero Canyon A world away from the picture-perfect beaches is the grand majesty of the Sumidero Canyon. Carved out over eons by the might of the Rio Grijalva, this natural wonder is located in the far south of the country and rewards discovery. Take a boat trip though the canyon, and find the ecological park hidden within.

Venture to Tulum

Perhaps the most scenic stretch of Mexico’s coast, the area around Tulum is popular with tourists for its natural tropical beauty and picturesque historical ruins. With a blend of high-end resorts, and relaxed beaches, the area is a fine base to explore the rest of Quintana Roo and Yucatan state.

See the Yucatan’s Museo Subacuatico de Arte (MUSA)

A truly unique blend of architecture and nature, the Museo Subacuatico de Arte (MUSA) is an underwater art gallery. Needing seen to be believed, the submarine museum has over 500 statues planted to the ocean floor. Each was designed to be colonised by marine life, you have the ideal mix of art and nature. Discover it by either scuba gear or glass bottomed boat.

Relax in Playa del Carmen

Cozumel Mexico’s Caribbean coast is rich in world-class tourist resorts. The high-rises, white sands, and temperate blue waters of Cancun attract tourists in their droves. But if you want a slightly lower key beach-side holiday then you could do worse than Playa del Carmen. With numerous boutique hotels, relaxed European flavour, and thinner crowds, this tourist town is as good a place as any to get away from it all.

Explore the cenotes in the Yucatan

Venture into the underworld by taking a trip to the world-famous cenotes of the Yucatan. These natural swimming pools were formed in the limestone over millennia and have left miraculous blue-tinged geological formations perfect for discovery. Many tour companies offer diving tours and the most impressive are the Sistem Dos Ojos found around 90 minutes north of Cancun.

See the pyramids of Teotihuacan

Mexico is bursting with fabulous historical sites, but one of the most easily accessible and impressive are the Teotihuacan pyramids. Conveniently located only 30 miles from Mexico City, the site is easily accessible. Discover this once vibrant, multi-cultural ancient metropolis for yourself and explore famous ruins such as the Avenue of the Dead and the Temple of Quetzalpapalotl.

These seven Mexican attractions only scratch the surface of what the country has to offer, so start planning your Mexican adventure soon!
