Crete: The Place To Be For Silver Travellers

Crete Crete is considered by many as the most spectacular island in Greece and it is known across the globe for its captivating, white sandy beaches that also benefit from dramatic outlooks.  For these reasons it is popular with tourists, who can enjoy a range of different holidays that will perfectly complement their budget, taste and preference.

It is a great place for mature travellers with a friendly welcoming feel and there are plenty of walking trails across the island, as well as pretty towns with interesting architecture and historical features for those who want to explore further afield.  The fresh food and fish markets are great fun and good value, whilst the harbour or coastal bars and restaurants provide excellent food along with local wine at reasonable prices.

Other attractions

As well as the charming beaches and relaxed atmosphere, there are so many things that make Crete very attractive: it has the perfect blend of modern European as well as ancient Greek civilizations, superb coasts, and surprisingly high mountains in the interior.

Dikteon Cave, Crete When you are in Crete, be sure to visit the Dikteon Cave just outside the village of Psyhro.  It is often one of the highlights of a tour of the island and is reputedly where Rhea hid the newborn Zeus from his father, Cronos.  The whole area is filled with stalactites and stalagmites.  It has long been associated with ancient worship and is rather a mystical place, originally uncovered by a British archaeologist in 1900.  The caves are reasonably well lit, although the ground underfoot can be a little uneven.

Another highlight is a trip to Knossos the capital of Minoan Crete and home to the famous myth of Theseus and the Minotaur.  And if you have time, venture out to Spinalonga, a small island near Elounda and previously a leper colony.  It’s almost unbelievable to think that lepers were kept here as recently as the 1950s.

Hotels and resorts

Because Crete is home to some of the finest attractions in Europe, its hotels range from 5* to more simple establishments, providing accommodation to suit all types of tourists, wherever you chose to stay on the island.  Whatever you decide, the facilities and amenities will be good, the views and scenery stunning.  Crete really is a place to unwind, relax and enjoy yourself.
