Singapore extends SG Clean visitor safety label

Gateway to South East Asia and a popular first stop for passengers wishing to explore further afield, Singapore is much more than a weekend break. Made up of 63 islands this city-state is rich with twists, turns and triumphs; its many slices of multicultural heritage are preserved in and around the city. Besides an array of attractions, the Lion City is home to a whole host of hidden gems, tranquil spots and amazing green spaces for moments to slow down, unwind and absorb a dose of sunshine to uplift your spirits for the day.

Clarke Quay, Singapore While anxieties about Covid-19 are certainly warranted, don’t let these worries mar your future visit to Singapore’s city in a garden.

Singapore is taking a cautious approach to re-opening her borders, and will gradually do so once the necessary safeguards are in place, while balancing public health and safety of locals and visitors remains paramount. Tourism will re-open in a safe and gradual manner, so that visitors can enjoy peace of mind when they arrive.

SG Clean Campaign

Singapore recently launched the SG Clean campaign which aims to ensure a high standard of safety and hygiene in public areas. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) is working closely with tourism stakeholders such as hotels, attractions and convention facilities, to ensure compliance with safe management measures. Strict checks will be conducted, and only tourism businesses which meet the safe management measures will be allowed to re-open. As of 1 July 2020, STB has issued more than 900 SG Clean Quality Mark certificates to tourism establishments, including F&B and retail within tourism establishments and Sentosa. Altogether, the National Environment Agency, Singapore Food Agency, Singapore Tourism Board and Enterprise Singapore have certified more than 16,000 individual premises SG Clean across Singapore. Over the long term, the aim is to certify more than 32,000 premises across the country, as a show of commitment to public health and safety.

So if you’re starting to think long haul for 2021, revisit Singapore, safe in the knowledge that your wellbeing is paramount in all establishments awarded the SG Clean quality mark.

Liz Newell

Silver traveller Liz Newell travels regularly to Singapore to visit her son and young grandchildren, and enjoys the country in all seasons:

“One of my favourite things to do is to head into town as soon as it gets dark and enjoy a cocktail at one of the many skyscraper bars,” says Liz, who flew back to Heathrow this year just as lockdown hit Britain.

“The heat of the sun has gone but it’s still deliciously warm, and whilst the drinks do tend to be a little pricey, it’s an experience you will never forget.”

“You can balance the holiday budget by eating dinner in one of Singapore’s many hawker centres, where you buy great-value dishes from food stalls to eat at informal tables. Singaporeans do it all the time. My favourite hawker centre is Lau Pa Sat, which was built in the 1830s and has been beautifully restored. Don’t miss Satay Street alongside it for the best chicken and beef skewers!”

Gardens by the Bay, Singapore “Singapore offers so many brilliant attractions to fill your days, but I never get tired of visiting the Gardens by the Bay. The Flower Dome is stunning, but my absolute favourite is the Cloud Forest where you wind up through mist and lush vegetation beside a waterfall, and watch the plant life changing, the higher you go.”

“Singapore is clean, orderly, and efficient. Cars are discouraged, so buses, taxis and the underground system are all cheap, and you’ll find people very helpful. The international atmosphere and the exotic surroundings couldn’t be more different from my hometown in England, but every time I go back, Singapore really does feel like home. I miss it so much when I can’t go!”
