Cumbrian break at the Beech Hill Hotel & Spa

The wordsmiths have often tried to describe the beauty and majesty of the Lake District.

William Wordsworth wrote his wonderful poetry, Beatrix Potter wrote about the beauty of the area in her children’s books, and William Heaton Cooper painted some magnificent pictures depicting the contrast from mountain to lake. But no one can describe the feelings of calm and wonder you get from looking at this beautiful scenery yourself.

Beech Hill Hotel jetty on Windermere The Beech Hill Hotel & Spa to is set on the southeastern side of Windermere and gives you the opportunity to never tire of this wonderful scenery on the western side of the lake. Look at the classic Coniston Fells of Coniston Old Man, Swirl How, and Wetherlam, further north are the iconic Langdale Pikes and Fairfield.

Beech Hill Hotel & Spa is 5 miles from Newby Bridge and 7 miles from Bowness on Winderemere and has a spectacular waterside setting. This is an ideal place to explore the Lake District.

Parking is at a premium and very difficult to find in the Lake District, but the Beech Hill Hotel & Spa has its own large car park off the road. Beautiful gardens lead down to the lake and its own jetty if you pop by on your own boat. You can also try a little fishing or just relaxing – what ever floats your boat – sorry couldn’t resist that!

As you walk into the Beech Hill Hotel, you could be forgiven for thinking that you are in a Scottish Highland hotel. Two tall stags adorn the entrance with tartan carpets throughout and the solid oak furnishings wrap around you and a warm welcome from the staff make you feel comfortable and nothing is too much trouble for them.

Beech Hill Hotel Burlington's Restaurant The view from the Griffin Bar Lounge and the AA rosettes Burlington’s Restaurant is stunning. The food is very good, and the staff are very attentive. The evening meal was very welcome after a day out walking, hot and wholesome, for example the starter blush tomato and basil risotto (I grade my chefs by how good their risotto is!) this was excellent. Steaks from the grill or Cumbrian chicken supreme and lots for the sweet tooth among us such as orange posset or sticky toffee pudding. If a lighter meal is required, the Griffin Bar is more casual, with leather couches and a few tables, serving bar food dishes.

The continental breakfast is included and is excellent, but if you wish to have a hot breakfast this is an extra cost, and worth it if you are setting out on a long walk.

The Spa at Beech Hill Hotel - photo credit: Beech Hill Hotel & Spa Most of the rooms have a view or part view of the lake. Some rooms have a patio to sit on, or maybe treat your self to the room with the four-poster bed. Whichever you choose, it will be comfortable. However, there isn’t a lift in the building, there are disabled rooms, but the stairs could be very problematic if you have a walking disability.

The spa is very modern and has a lovely pool, sauna, steam room and two outdoor hot tubs overlooking Windermere. This ambience is a delight after a busy day touring the Lakes, and a good way to relax before dinner. If you require further treatments, facials, body scrubs and wraps, massage and body therapies are bookable for a little pampering.

View of Windermere from our room, no. 73 The hotel is licensed for weddings and the Windermere backdrop is perfect for some memorable photos.

The Lake District has always been very popular with tourists, and there is so much to do and see. Many people love the buzz of Bowness on Windermere or Ambleside, but stretch yourself a little further and walk the quieter paths. Take a leaf out of our past authors and painters books and behold the wonders of the Lake District, or just sit back and relax at the Beech Hill Hotel & Spa.
