Tucked away on the southeast corner of Spain’s Mediterranean coast, Almeria is one of Andalucia’s hidden gems. With its majestic mountains, wooded peaks, vast expanses of semidesert scrubland reminiscent of the wild west and spectacular coastline, this is an area of stunning natural beauty.
El Pueblito – HPB’s “little village” – was added to the portfolio in 2010. It was built from new, but you’d never know it; the site’s original 90-odd properties, plus restaurant (the Jacaranda), clubroom, sports and leisure facilities were constructed in such a way as to look timeless, with a real friendly, village-y feel.
With the Mediterranean on one side, the Sierra Cabrera mountains and desert on the other, El Pueblito de Alfaix could hardly look more Spanish. The beautifully landscaped grounds blend seamlessly into the surroundings and include swimming pools, tennis courts, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, gyms (indoor and outdoor), bowling green, clubhouse, activities room, restaurant and bar on-site. A further restaurant and mini-supermarket are within walking distance.
Contemporary villas added to the portfolio
The site has recently expanded to include three new three-bedroomed villas. These have been designed in complete contrast to the traditional, Moorish-style whitewashed villas and apartments, with contemporary style kitchens, bedrooms and interiors and overlook one of the many swimming pools on site.
As with all HPB sites, the refurbishment programme is ongoing. The one and two-bedroom apartments and the vast majority of villas have been refreshed, with new furnishings matching those used in the new villas. The refurbishment included new sofas, armchairs, curtains, artwork, improved clocks and modernised lighting in the living areas and the bedrooms have been supplied with new curtains, headboards, bed-runners and artwork. Work is currently ongoing to refresh the kitchens, which now have glass doors to the wall cabinets, and dishwashers where space allows. Thereafter work will begin to refresh bathrooms and the public areas of the site.
The towns and villages around El Pueblito have something for everyone – from those seeking a relaxing break by the sea, to more active holidaymakers interested in diving, swimming, tennis, sailing, cycling, fishing, riding, wind-surfing, water skiing, mountain biking and more.
Nearby the typical market village of Turre has various shops and some very good Spanish restaurants. The traditional fishing town of Garucha, between Mojacar and Vera, claims to be ‘the seafood capital of the Costa Almeria’ and is famous for its large red prawns and delicious tapas. It’s also well known for its magnificent, golden sandy beaches and watersports. Next door Mojacar, with its distinct bohemian air, is a delightful mix of old and new. This popular beach resort, with its long sandy beach, is full of lively bars and restaurants and offers a host of activities, while the old hilltop town, with its pretty whitewashed houses and winding cobbled streets, is steeped in history and tradition.
Exclusive holidays for life: An initial payment from £5,000 and a quarterly fee of under £38 (that is around £150 a year), which can increase in line with but not exceed the Retail Price Index Excluding Mortgage Interest (RPIX), gives you access to all HPB’s holiday homes. For each HPB holiday, you will pay a no-profit user charge covering only property running and maintenance costs and use of on-site facilities. The average charge is the same throughout the year, and for a studio is around £360 a week and £540 for a two bedroom property. Larger properties are also available. After an initial charge of 25% your money is invested in a fund of holiday properties and securities. The fund itself meets annual charges of 2.5% of its net assets at cost, calculated monthly. Your investment return is purely in the form of holidays and, as with most investments, your capital is at risk. You can surrender your investment to the company after two years or more (subject to deferral in exceptional circumstances) but you will get back less than you invested because of the charges referred to above, as well as other overheads and changes in the value of the fund’s properties and securities.
